When is MEDICAL DETOX Necessary?
Understanding and Choosing a Medical Detox
What Rules Govern Whether Medical Detox is the Right Choice?
Colorado Drug Rehab often receives calls for someone that needs medically assisted detoxification. These calls can come from family members or other loved ones that recognize that the addict or alcoholic has been using to the extent that "going cold turkey" at home or even having some assistance at home can lead to problems that should have medical oversight.
Here is the general criteria for discerning whether or not Medical Detox is essential:
1. the consumption of large quantities of alcohol for an extended period of time (approx. one quart of hard liquor/day would be considered someone that would need medical attention. Remember this: A mixed drink with one shot of alcohol has the same total alcohol content as a 12 oz. bottle of beer or a 5 oz. glass of wine. A shot= 1.5 oz., Therefore, a quart is 36 oz. which equals 24 shots of liquor, which is the same as 24 beers.)
2. Anyone that has been taking benzodiazapines on a regular basis is also susceptible to seizures during withdrawals and should have medical assistance in detoxing.
3. Anyone taking barbiturates is also susceptible to seizures and should have medical oversight.

NOTE: Anyone addicted to opiates will want medical detox because they feel that they need to be "tappered down" on their dosage to avoid the pain and anxiety that they have experienced without opiates to help them in the withdrawal process.
This is the problem with poorly run social model detox (social model detox doesnt' use medication in the withdrawal process). However, many programs have social model detoxes that are more effective and efficient than the medical model detox programs and they have painless detox, as well.
This is unbelievable by those that are wanting drugs and are worried that they may be facing a withdrawal that is similar to the bad experience that they had the previous time that they detoxed without any professional assistance or in a program that didn't give them the needed clinical care to make drug-free withdrawals a painless success.
The beauty of a good social model detox lies in the fact that after a person leaves a medical detox for opiate addiction, they have, more than likely, been given benzodiazapines and other pharmecuticals that will require some futher withdrawal before they are stable.
Remember, that this note applies to people that are detoxing from opiate addiction and does NOT apply to the other addiciton listed above that most certainly need Medical Detox or Medically Assisted Detox.
Unless you need medical attention, as described above, A Good Social Model Detox is Usually Better Choice.
You feel better sooner and it is much less expensive.
Many alcohol and drug treatment programs do not provide detox or withdrawal programs, therefore it is up to the addict or alcoholic to detox on their own or go to a licensed detox center.
There are some programs that profess that detox isn't necessary... there are many other lies on the internet.
